History of Steamboat Julia Dean

Though she only ran the rivers for five years, the Julia Dean was a very well known steamboat, not only running on the Black River to Pocahontas, but also working on the Mississippi River. Launched in 1851, the Julia Dean sank in Black River a few miles downstream from Pocahontas, April 30, 1853, but was raised and put back in service later that year.

The sand bar where the Julia Dean sank and lost her cargo was named the Julia Dean Bar and it was there that the Dekaleb Pearl was later found. An exceptionally large freshwater pearl, the discovery of the Dekaleb Pearl, and the huge amount of money that was paid for it, sparked a “Great Pearl Rush” on the Black River, a miniature version of the gold rushes that took place elsewhere in the world. The Randolph County Heritage Museum has a few small pearls taken from Black River mussel shells, as well as a wonderful display of the Black River “mother of pearl” button business that once thrived here.
